 The University of North Alabama extends a warm welcome to international students! As one of the first 100 universities among over 4,000 institutions in the United States and the oldest one in the State of Alabama, UNA is offering you more than you can imagine. 

The Story of UNA

The University of North Alabama, the first state-funded higher education Institution in Alabama, was established in 1830 as LaGrange College. In 1855, the College moved to its current location in Florence, Alabama, and changed its name to Florence Wesleyan University. Accordingly, in 1872 the University became the first state-supported teachers college south of the Ohio River. The admission of women students two years later placed it among the first coeducational institution in the United States. Today, the University of North Alabama stands as one of the finest universities in the United States and prepares its students for tomorrow while maintaining valuable traditions and a rich heritage.

LOCATION

The University of North Alabama occupies a beautiful campus of over 52 hectares in a residential section of Florence, Alabama. UNA's initial campus facilities master plan was developed by the world-famous Frederick Law Olmsted architectural firm which designed New York City's Central Park. Together with neighboring cities, the four-city metropolitan area called the shoals has a population of more than 140,000 and offers

Weather and Climate

Safety

You will find the UNA campus and surrounding cities have very safe and secure environments. The city of Florence and the shoals are very ranked as one of the safest metropolitan area in the United States according to the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Reports. University police officers in both uniform and plain clothes continuously patrol on foot, bicycles and vehicles to protect the campus community against bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. The entire campus receives patrol coverage in an effort to prevent crime and to detect any security or safety violations. The University Police Department can be reached easily 24 hors a day, 7 days a week.

Academic and Accreditation

The University of North Alabama is a state university and is accredited by the commission on Colleges of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097: Telephone Number 404-679-4501) to award bachelor's, master's and education specialist degrees. It has separate and additional accreditations for its College of Business (i.e. ACBSP), Education (i.e., NCATE), and Nursing and Applied Health (i.e. NLN). Additionally, UNA has accreditation of certification in a number of disciplinary area such as art, chemistry, music, industrial hygiene, and social work.

The University has outstanding faculty members who are experts in their fields. All classes at the University are taught by faculty members (which means that no classes are taught by graduate assistants). The average class size is 23 students to a faculty members, and virtually no classes have more than 55 students. Because of this, there is a great deal of personal attention given to students.

Upon obtaining the required English Proficiency and gaining mastery of the English Language, international students can choose either baccalaureate degree program or a masters degree program at the University, Academic programs at the University are offered through four colleges. These are the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education and the College of Nursing & Allied Health.
